Yesterday afternoon, I had the opportunity to watch a Hairy Woodpecker building a cavity from start to finish. The Paper Birch used for the cavity has been dead for approximately 10 years, and had been heavily used in the past years for feeding and building. Until now, I had observed excavating only in the spring, not at this time of year. So I am wondering: Will this cavity be used over night and in bad weather conditions? Do other cavity using birds that stick around over the winter also make or use cavities in the winter? Burkhard
