(Memories of Chris Pielou!) =20

=20

Our tendency to avoid Type I errors is good, but we need to do a better =
job on the other side. How many of us have come to know something, =
based on observations, but don=E2=80=99t have the stats. to prove what =
we know? =20

=20

We ignore anecdotal evidence (Wrong word?) at our peril. We =
shouldn=E2=80=99t be obliged to accept anecdotal implications with =
certainly, but need to at least take the questions they raise seriously.

=20

(But you=E2=80=99ve heard my rants on this before, haven=E2=80=99t you =
Dave? J!)

Otherwise known as a Type II error or a false negative!

=20

I have probably said this before, but when Donald Rumseld said =
=E2=80=9CThe absence of evidence is not evidence of absence,=E2=80=9D he =
as logically spot on. =E2=80=9CNo evidence=E2=80=9D proves exactly =
nothing, and I wish more people would see that!

=20

(Hence the absence of proof of the existence of the Eastern Cougar in NS =
does not disprove their existence!)

=20

Ain=E2=80=99t logic fun?

=20

I know there is a lot of disbelief about cougars in NS, but My wife and =
I saw one while driving up to Cape Breton in the late 1960's. I was =
quite familiar with these critters from several sightings on Vancouver =
Island while conducting salmon research.

I no nothing of the provenance of this yet so no warranty to it's =
validity etc. Purportedly near Weymouth NS, certainly the background =
and time of day could be SW Nova.

=20

Still messing with Google+ but this is is shared publicly so hopefully =
no acct/login necessary. Let me know how it works. If I can track down =
anything further I'll post.
