Hi All, Oct 31, 2014
For some years I took part in Leaf Watch and recorded vegetation in =
the yard or nearby. One record for 2003 was in late Oct so I pulled it =
for comparison.

Some vegetation is later this year some earlier so take your pick. =
For example:
Norway Maple 95% Yellow in 2003; 60% in 2014
Black Cherry 95% shed in 2003 and 2014
Virginia Creeper 50% shed in 2003; 100% in 2014
Crack Willow 100% green in 2003 and 2014

It should come as no surprise that different species and different =
variations of the same species should interpret the seasonal signals in =
a different way. One plant of Aster cordifolius is still in bloom weeks =
after most were entirely past bloom.=20

Differences of opinion enable horse races, stock markets and =
evolution and, in general, are valued except in dictatorial democracies. =

My strong impression is that the autumn foliage is stretching out this =
year. The coastal barrens were slow to adopt colour, and there are =
still maples with leaves in many places. And the city is still quite =
green.

Another impression is that the woods are very quiet, with few resident =
or wintering birds. There was a heavy migration of chickadees, and I =
see few anywhere away from feeders.

There was a single Spring Peeper calling tonight at my parents' =

My brother was remarking that the leaves seem to be hanging on, and =
some are even still green, later than usual. Perhaps a week or more =
later. I had been thinking the same thing. Right now it looks to me =
more like mid-October than the end of October. Does anyone else have =
this impression?
