The Peterson Field Guide to Ferns is very good as Jim says.
Another option is the =E2=80=98Ferns and Fern Allies of Canada=E2=80=99 by =
W. Cody and Don
Britton. It is available as a pdf (
http://publications.gc.ca/collections/collection_2013/aac-aafc/agrhist/A53-=
1829-1989-eng.pdf
) (although I think a print copy would be easier to use).
Another resource that I find fascinating is Pat von Aderkas=E2=80=99 summar=
y of
fern collections in NS even though it was done almost 30 years ago. One of
his conclusions was that after a review of ferns in NS was published, there
was new interest and we learned more about fern distributions in NS.

*Abstract:*
The collections of the ferns and fern allies of Nova Scotia were recorded
from the various herbaria and entered into a computer. A total of 3463
collections of 73 species of ferns (47 species) and fern allies (26
species) was made between 1854 and 1983 by 164 collectors. This computer
data base was used to generate a catalogue of all the collections, as well
as maps based on a 10 square kilometer grid system using a universal
transverse mercator projection. The historical collecting trends are
discussed, particularly as they relate to distributions of various species.
