Recently there have been thefts, drug activity, mischief and = vandalism happening within those areas that we walk. The Military Police = and DND have for many years allowed us to wander the area with little = restriction and we really want that access to continue.=20 After having a wonderful meeting this morning with my contact with the = Military Police, our NSBS paid members will continue to have pretty much = exclusive rights to use the area with a proviso or two. Our members = could be challenged when on the property and will have to show that they = are a member of the NSBS. In the next issue of NS Birds you will find at = least 3 Member cards (business card type) which can be use to identify = you as a member. It is also a great way to promote our society to others = that you meet. In the meantime, should anyone wish to use Hartlen Point, = you should contact me directly and pick up a card from me. (I just = received a supply last week). Email me at david_currie@ns.sympatico.ca=20 As members we also have to understand that there could be operations or = investigations that are happening on the property coincidental to us = being there, so if you are asked to leave, it is for safety reasons and = not because we do not have access. Being compliant, understanding and = friendly will allow us to continue to use the property in the future.=20 When provided a member card, you will also receive a number to call = should you see activity that is unusual. The DND would like to continue = the relationship they have with our members and receive tips from us. = Recently for example, there have been duck hunters on the property...not = allowed..so report the gun shots and help while avoiding any = confrontation.=20 If you are not a paying member of the NSBS, you will be taking a chance = that you could be asked to leave, personal identification requested and = fined for trespassing. Finally, I have birded Hartlen Point for 35 years and always felt safe, = so making the area seem unsafe with this message is unintentional. As = birders we often find ourselves in areas where not many people go, the = areas tend to be remote or secluded so you should be thinking about your = personal safety here or in other places you frequent.
