Birding was slow and by the time I = was three quarters out to the end of Second Peninsula=2C I only had recorde= d seven species of birds. After covering the last section of Second Peninsu= la I was over 20. I actually saw my first two pileated woodpeckers for all= the years that I've birded out there=2C so that was exciting. There were = two pectoral sandpipers=2C which gave me great looks behind the cow barn on= the Rhodenizer property. In the weed patch=2C left by Glenn every year fo= r the birds=2C there was lots of sparrow activity. So many that it actuall= y was very hard to count or get accurate figures. I had 19 Savannah sparro= ws=2C 11 song sparrows=2C one juvenile white-crowned sparrow=2C one house s= parrow and an American goldfinch. Forty-six mourning doves also flew out. = I did not get chance to count what was in the area to the upper left=2C bu= t lots of sparrows were moving around there as well. They were too far awa= y for an id as were the sparrows behind the Stevens barn. =20 =20 Glenn Rhodenizer told me that on the back beach there had been a flycatcher= a week ago. He thought that it was a flicker first=2C so of that size=2C = but when the tail was fanned out there was a large white band. It went up = in the air and acted like a flycatcher. Glenn knows the Eastern kingbird= =2C so it was not this species. In the spring 10 had been along Bachman's = Beach. This would have been in May. It was something he had not seen befo= re. =20 =20 In September=2C close to the third week=2C Glenn's cat brought a bird home= =2C which at the time was still alive. It expired shortly after being picke= d up. It was running across the yard after being released by the cat=2C bu= t definitely not healthy by its movements. It was collected and put into = a box. Photos had been taken of the bird and a phone call was made to me. = I had asked that the photos be forwarded as Glenn knew it was rail like=2C= but did not know of which species. At the time I could not go to view the= bird itself. I finally got to see the photos on Saturday. It was a Virgi= nia Rail. =20 =20 James R.
