Pleasant Hill, Sat Sept 20, 2014 Update. Lots of fast moving new arrivals this morning. Most of the warbler flocks I encountered were dominated by Blackpolls, but there were also good numbers of Black-throated Green Warblers and 30+ Yellow-rumped Warblers. Dennis Garratt also had a nice flock of Palm Warblers. Other warblers included 1 Bay-breasted, 1 Tennessee, 1 Nashville, 1 Yellow, and the ever present Common Yellowthroats. The Bay-breasted was a nice one, still showing lots of bay coloration along its sides and lots of black in the wings. Vireos - Only 1 Blue-headed today, but several Red-eyed, and best of all 2 Warbling Vireos. The bright one was doing a good job of trying to imitate a Philadelphia Vireo it was very bright with lots of yellow on its sides but paler throat. The dull Warbling vireo was very dull but much easier to identify. The bright Warbling was fast moving, on its own and feeding in the brambles left of the Irving entrance. The dull Warbling was with Blackpolls and feeding in the Lower Field and pine trees behind Tom's Restaurant. Other goodies included: 1 Baltimore Oriole found by Dennis between Irving and Schultz Streets Entrances. 1 Indigo Bunting - spotted by Dennis near the feeders on Irving. This is day 3 for this particular bird and appeared to still be traveling with a small flock of White-throated Sparrows. 1 Eastern Pewee in the lower left hand corner on the cemetery. Across the street from Irving is an entrance to the Little Sackville River Trail (the RAB section) Dennis and I had a very friendly, pick it up and put it in your pocket, Merlin, and a migrating Northern Harrier. First when we saw the Merlin it was perched on a rain gutter, then it popped over to a nearby pine tree were it sat contently allowing Dennis to snap quite a few pictures. Once the wind picked up I decided to do a quick 30 Minute Hawk Watch. I had 3 more migrating Merlins, 1 Peregrine Falcon - eastern race, 1 local Bald Eagle, and 2 local/non-migrating Red-tailed Hawks. Also in the cemetery itself a Sharp-shinned Hawk. My hawk watching was 'rounded out' by 3 helium filled party balloons. -Cheers, Clarence PS It was a good day for mammals at the cemetery as well, Rita Viau and Donna Redden spotted 3 White-tailed Deer, I had a Short-tailed Weasel as well as a Short-tailed Shrew and as always Red Squirrels were present.
