Hi All,
This week had the highest volume of night flight calls for this season.
There was a strong migration of warblers throughout the week. The most
common was Magnolia Warbler with strong flights of Common Yellowthroat,
Ovenbirds, Northern Parula, Blackpoll Warblers, and Black-throated Green
Warblers. The most common bird, however, was Swainson's Thrush with 284
night flight calls compared to 121 flight calls for the most common warbler,
Magnolia. There was one Gray-cheeked Thrush, along with a few Veeries and
Hermit Thrushes. The sparrows were still sparse, as expected, but with an
increase of Savannah Sparrows over previous weeks. A total of 1,231 night
flight calls were recorded during this seven-day period.
Due to a fairly strong southerly flow on the night of September 2-3, a
number of rare birds were detected this week.
The best of these was a Henslow's Sparrow. It has a distinctive night flight
call and can be identified with a fairly high degree of certainty.
Also recorded were Wood Thrush and Prairie Warbler. These also have distinct
night flight calls.
Two other rare warbler species were recorded: Prothonotary Warbler and 2
Golden-winged/Blue-winged Warblers. The flight calls of these two species
are more difficult to identify with certainty but are included in these
week's lists since both the sound of the calls and their spectrograms fit
the traits associated with these species.
A summary of the week's flight calls and wing sounds are summarized below.
