Quoting Jim Wolford <jimwolford@eastlink.ca>:

>> SEPT. 1, 2014 - Pat & I had a Labour Day walk in Wolfville along
>> the rail trail west of town. Not far east of Cherry Lane, on the
>> old railroad tracks, I spotted a couple of tall weeds sporting
>> large pink flowers. I recognized this plant as our third species
>> of Impatiens, alias jewelweed, touch-me-not, or (my own name?)
>> hummingbird heaven.
>>
>> Zinck does not list a common name for the third species, Impatiens
>> glandulifera, which I believe is an alien species that is rumored
>> to be invasive. I have seen it in England, on Brier Island (where
>> there is no evidence of invasiveness that I have seen), and once in
>> King's County, where it was obviously planted by someone but
>> subsequently disappeared.

* we found it to be fairly frequent in NS in 2010 (as per the appended
records) - especially along the coast in low stands very different
from the 2m heights we're used to in Ontario. I think I waypointed 5
stands in driving home from northern New Brunswick over the past 2
days, mostly on steep roadside slopes along lakes or the St Lawrence.
At home I see that the United Church has replaced their stand with
gravel, since the species is whooped as invasive, though others in the
village still have them in their gardens (the plants and flowers are
very charming).

I think a control organism has recently been released in England,
where it's a much more invasive menace than in most Canadian sites.

You'll see that we use "Pink Jewelweed" as the common name - made up
by us in Toronto long before we knew of "Himalayan Balsam" or the
unfortunate British moniker "Policeman's Helmet.'
