You may want to pause for a minute of silence at 1 p.m. on Monday, September 1, the centennial of the moment when "Martha" - the last Passenger Pigeon on the planet - quietly kicked the bucket at the Cincinnati Zoo. Many organizations are acknowledging what is arguably the world's most infamous extinction event, including the <http://www.rom.on.ca/en/exhibitions-galleries/exhibitions/current-exhibitio ns/passenger-pigeons> Royal Ontario Museum, the <http://nature.ca/en/plan-your-visit/what-see-do/whats/passenger-pigeons> Canadian Museum of Nature, and the <http://www.si.edu/Exhibitions/Details/Once-There-Were-Billions-Vanished-Bir ds-of-North-America-5126> Smithsonian Institution. In case you missed it, please read <http://www.birdscanada.org/organization/images/news/pdfs/BWCsu14PAPI.pdf> "One Hundred Years after Martha, the Last Passenger Pigeon" from the Summer issue of Bird Studies Canada's magazineBirdWatch Canada, written by our Director of National Programs Jon McCracken. ------=_NextPart_000_0069_01CFC5C3.D948B870 Content-Type: text/html; charset="us-ascii" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable <html xmlns:v=3D"urn:schemas-microsoft-com:vml" = xmlns:o=3D"urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" = xmlns:w=3D"urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:word" = xmlns:m=3D"http://schemas.microsoft.com/office/2004/12/omml" = xmlns=3D"http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40"><head><meta = http-equiv=3DContent-Type content=3D"text/html; = charset=3Dus-ascii"><meta name=3DGenerator content=3D"Microsoft Word 12 = (filtered medium)"><base href=3D"x-msg://2/"><style><!-- /* Font Definitions */ @font-face {font-family:Helvetica; panose-1:2 11 6 4 2 2 2 2 2 4;} @font-face {font-family:"Cambria Math"; panose-1:2 4 5 3 5 4 6 3 2 4;} @font-face {font-family:Calibri; panose-1:2 15 5 2 2 2 4 3 2 4;} @font-face {font-family:Tahoma; panose-1:2 11 6 4 3 5 4 4 2 4;} /* Style Definitions */ p.MsoNormal, li.MsoNormal, div.MsoNormal {margin:0cm; margin-bottom:.0001pt; font-size:12.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman","serif";} a:link, span.MsoHyperlink {mso-style-priority:99; color:blue; text-decoration:underline;} a:visited, span.MsoHyperlinkFollowed {mso-style-priority:99; color:purple; text-decoration:underline;} span.apple-converted-space {mso-style-name:apple-converted-space;} span.EmailStyle18 {mso-style-type:personal-reply; font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif"; color:#1F497D;} .MsoChpDefault {mso-style-type:export-only; font-size:10.0pt;} @page WordSection1 {size:612.0pt 792.0pt; margin:72.0pt 72.0pt 72.0pt 72.0pt;} div.WordSection1 {page:WordSection1;} --></style><!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <o:shapedefaults v:ext=3D"edit" spidmax=3D"1026" /> </xml><![endif]--><!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <o:shapelayout v:ext=3D"edit"> <o:idmap v:ext=3D"edit" data=3D"1" /> </o:shapelayout></xml><![endif]--></head><body lang=3DEN-CA link=3Dblue = vlink=3Dpurple><div class=3DWordSection1><p class=3DMsoNormal><span = style=3D'font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif";color:#1F497= D'>Paul: Thanks for bringing some attention to this excellent = article on the passenger pigeon and its ‘phases’ of = extinction.
