hi Fred
I suspect it doesn't stand much competition
and needs reasonable soil - ph wise.
In this case the side of the ditch was bare and sweet clover grows along the road in the area  a good indication of reasonable soil ph. In addition there seems to be a seepage of water into the ditch just there.
