On the subject of chimney swift movements during the late summer period,
some may be interested to learn what is happening around our known nesting
sites this year. There are two young swifts still being fed at our East
Dalhousie barn (a small family this year). They are late nestlings,
compared to the other nests in Cherryfield this year, but still within the
reproductive window. Robie Tufts had it right (of course)! Back in 1988, I
took photos of fledglings clinging to our East Dalhousie barn wall on Aug
13th , still not quite ready for the first flight.

Don Barnes and Jude Steves of Cherryfield, Annapolis County recorded
movements of chimney swifts at their property on the dates below. They are
excellent note-takers, and over the years have recorded the dates of
first/last swift appearances, nesting dates, etc. Their impression
regarding the swift appearances recorded below is that these brief, very
low- flying visits over their barn and property are the individuals from
families of local nesting swifts of this year. They no longer roost in the
barn, so they must have joined the others in Middleton, Wolfville, or
elsewhere? Do they use more than one site? It would be wonderful to know
where precisely our young fledglings go when they leave our barns each year.

Meanwhile, our East Dalhousie fledglings will soon join the other swifts,
those that are still remaining in NS! Presumably some of you will be
counting them at the chimneys in the coming days. (Wish I could mark them
somehow, so you will know which ones are our little ones!)
