Hi Randy
Reminds me a long time ago I had a Dutchman out fishing at Pesekawa Lake. He had a green hat - a really bright shade = never saw that shade before or since. The many blackflies wanted to land on his hat. They were a couple of cms deep at times but they never bothered attacking flesh - a funny hat it was.
That night after he took a little of my medicine he starting telling war stories. I wish I had of had a recorder - it would have made a good book.
Enjoy the summer
Paul

There is a huge literature on colour preference in biting flies, mostly centred around the agricultural pests. For many species, black is the number one preference, followed by other dark colours. When I teach field biology I warn the students to choose lighter coloured clothing...but fashion takes precedence, and many come in wearing the black leggings anyway.

Randy
