It would be early for horned or red-necked at this poin= t=2C both of which I would assume would still have breeding plumage. The b= ird was identified by the observer as a Western grebe. The description sou= nds good=2C but unless others see this bird or can get a photograph=2C I re= ally cannot say for sure that it was a western.
