July 29 and will = begin with a presentation at 7 pm at the New Glasgow Library at 182 = Dalhousie St. Holly Lightfoot from Bird Studies Canada Swiftwatch = program will give a presentation on the natural history of the = endangered Chimney Swift and how you can identify and protect this = species. After the program we will meet about 8:30 pm at the parking lot = of the near-by Swift roost chimney of the Temperance St. School at 334 = Temperance St. to watch the spectacle of the swifts as they enter the = chimney to spend the night. Soon the swifts will be leaving our area for = another year so this is a great opportunity to see a good number of = swifts. Last night July 21 the count was 190. With the closure of the = school this June, the future of the building is uncertain so nice to see = a crowd to demonstrate interest in the Chimney Swift.=20 Identifying Harmful wild Plants Recently I received this kind invitation to Naturalists (as well as the = Young Naturalists) from Charlie Strickland, search director of the = Pictou County Volunteer Ground Search and Rescue. The presentation is on = identifying wild plants that potentially could produce rashes, allergic = reactions etc.and that one might encounter on outdoor walks. The = speaker, Marian Munro (Zinck), is no stranger to our Pictou Co = Naturalist club having given at least 2 presentations in the past. = However it has been quite awhile and with the added bonus of a walk the = day after the presentation. Marian is the author of the 2 volume revised = "Roland's Flora of Nova Scotia" and a great authority on NS wild plants. = Note the presentation is Friday July 25th at 7 p m in the Alma fire = hall.
