This morning I did a little searching. I found three interesting sources, all suggest it is *Xanthoria*, likely *X. parietina*, but that there are a few other species in the genus in NS. Frances Anderson, associate with the NS Museum, has looked at lichens in several locations in NS. Of interest here is a manuscript: =E2=80=98Lichen= s of West Ironbound Island, Lunenburg County, Nova Scotia=E2=80=99 from October= 2009 ( http://kccns.org/include/docs/west_ironbound_lichens.pdf). It includes a description of habitats and which lichens are associated with each habitat. Patricia and James Hinds have studied the lichens of Maine, including Xanthoria, see =E2=80=98The lichen genus Xanthoria in Maine.=E2=80=99 The M= aine Naturalist (forerunner of Northeastern Naturlaist) 1(1): 1-16. Yes the very first paper in the first issue of what is now the Northeastern Naturalist! http://www.jstor.org/discover/10.2307/3858193?uid=3D3739432&uid=3D2&uid=3D3= 737720&uid=3D4&sid=3D21104360834137 An amazing resource I came across was the lichen section of the digitalmycology website. http://lichens.digitalmycology.com/macrolichens/Xanthoria.html. Great photos and far more information than I can comfortably process on a summer Sunday morning.
