My brother and I watched a Tricolored Heron adult out on Chockle Cap, off Long Island in The Rackets, Lun Co this afternoon (this is off of Heckman's Island, nr Lunenburg). We had great views of the bird standing on the turf high over the sheer rock faces. There is no question about its identity. It was skittish- we noted a small heron a few times and then it would fly towards the other side of the island. We'd take the boat around and would catch a glimpse of it there before it would fly across again. So we'd go back around the island for another view. It was seen in flight and eventually sat still for awhile providing an excellent look. This small island is 10-20' rock faces all around with turf on top. Not really typical heron habitat. Here are a few pics: https://www.flickr.com/photos/92981528@N08/14713549873/ https://www.flickr.com/photos/92981528@N08/14693395482/ Lots of GBB and Herring Gulls, some gull chicks still fuzzy brown. Many Cormorants (adult and young) as well and what looked to be a cormorant nest in one of several visible dead trees. Rowdy company for the Tricolored Heron. But it was not being harassed and still there when we left. Blown here by TS Arthur maybe? Nancy
