I wouldn't touch our wild lupins here!

The toxicity of the seeds is a well known story, also common for other legu=
me seeds e.g., many types of Phaseolus beans in S. America will cause you =
terrible terrible gas if not soaked and washings discarded first, again lea=
rned from experience (but well known to locals). I think there are no alkal=
oids in the leaves, the problem is in the seeds.

David, are you referring to "Edible Wild Plants" by Oliver Perry Medsger? =
This was my primary reference for this topic for a number of years; but I e=
ventually found a number of mistakes in it. What is the best reference for=
 edibility today?

Hello David,

A low alkaloid variety of the White Lupin, Lupinus albus, was subjected to =
trials as a forage crop here in Atlantic Canada (Nfld; PEI?) a number of ye=
ars ago (~1995 - 2005 perhaps). I have no idea whether or not farmers conti=
nued to use it after the trials.

While I have seen lupin flour as a food ingredient,I am not aware of any lu=
pins being grown for human consumption in Atlantic Canada. I understand th=
at L. angustifolius is the species used to make lupin flour and that most o=
f the production is in Australia.

Cheers

Ron
