Yesterday I spent some time in S. KIngs & found one woods road w= here there were good numbers. However it was a very frustrating exercise as= they never perched & disappeared quickly. There were 25+ butterflies & I d= id not manage one photo. There were four large fritillaries=2C one a Greate= r=2C 2 S/B Fritillaries=2C many Crescents=2C several skippers & the usual T= . Swallowtails=2C Spring Azures & Ringlets. Largely a wasted effort.=20 Angus p.s. The only Baltimore Checkerspot I ever saw in the province was at Mount= Uniacke many years ago. A great find. Ken! I spent ti= me in =0A= squares 20PR04(South Merland)=2C 20PR 03(North Intervale) and 20PR13( Boyls= ton) in =0A= Antigonish and Guysborough counties. This is back country and in 6 hrs I on= ly =0A= met 1 truck plus 3 ATV's. One of the ATV's was driven by 2 kids prob. under= 12 =0A= age and when we met on a road turn they tipped a little before up-righting.= I =0A= was creeping along at the time. I sure was glad they did not tip. Two adult= s =0A= (likely parents) were in another ATV with them. A few violations of the ATV= act =0A= here I believe! =0A= =0A= Anyway butterflies were around although some =0A= searching was required=2C I tallied 12 species which I will summarize per s= quare =0A= below. I found many of the butterflies seemed to be fully charged especiall= y the =0A= Canadian Tiger Swallowtails=3B it took me quite a while to document one wit= h a =0A= photo as they seemed to be in constant flight and I had none puddling unlik= e =0A= other days.=0A= =0A= My best find was a new NS butterfly for me =0A= and a stunning one at that- the Baltimore Checkerspot. I found =0A= 2 along the power-line near Donnelly's Lake. One was cooperative enough for= a =0A= photo. I think this may only be the third record for the atlas period for N= S =0A= with one found a couple of squares over (20NR83) July 7=2C 2012 by Richard = Mash. =0A= Richard is coming up with great butterflies in that square with more than 4= 0 =0A= species observed. =0A= =0A= Areas which were good for butterflies were =0A= grassy areas near small road culverts for Hobomoks and some chives in flowe= r in =0A= an abandoned property which had my Pecks=2C a couple of Hobomoks and a coup= le Can =0A= Tiger Swallowtails. I searched a bog for late Elfins but found no butterfli= es in =0A= the bog.There was however an unopened white orchid. Earlier in the season = =0A= almost every bog had either Brown or Hoary Elfin the latter another first = =0A= butterfly for me for NS.
