Hi Dave P. & All,                                June 30, 2014
    I use the rotary mower mostly for mulching leaves in the fall. My =
earthworms are too lazy to eat more than a trace of them so most leaves =
have to be composted in what was once a garden and mowed leaves don't =
blow around. For decades I mowed prunings up to 3/4" diameter, and this =
was good for fungi, but is tough on an old rotary mower.=20
.=20
    A scythe has the advantage, in addition to freedom from noise and =
air pollution over both rotary and push mowers, of being more versatile. =
Early in the year one can cut narrow/interrupted paths. Later, after =
'weeds' have flowered some patches or even single plants can be left for =
seed. Around the end of winter, e.g. Junco will vigorously tug at =
overwintered Aster cordifolius heads in the hope of finding a few full =
seeds and American goldfinch sometimes feed on Gnapweed seeds (very =
bitter) and no shed seed goes to waste. In addition, mowers tend to =
grind insects.

    On the other hand rotary and push mowers have the advantage that =
clippings can be left in place and this over time will enhance soil =
organic matter and discourage Chinch Bugs which are favored by dry soil =
conditions. But the same effect can be achieved by sifting debris from =
compost and adding a light dressing to drier patches. This is labor =
intensive and much Chinch Bug grief could be avoided if contractors =
surfaced lawns with good topsoil as opposed to coarse or unstructured =
subsoil.=20

  Thanks. Interesting comment (lawns=20
  and ornamentals to be most of the problem here).

  If people would stick to mowing (preferably with reel mower or scythe) =
they would have better lawns and we would all enjoy more wildlife!

  Hi Dave P.  & All,                                June 30, 2014
      Good letter you had today. I don't know for sure yet but I suspect =
lawns=20
  and ornamentals to be most of the problem here.
