--047d7b675ee28e536304fcbcc464 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8 Last weekend I organised two boat charters for Meetup groups in Halifax. The theme was islands. *June 21* On Saturday we visited Pearl Island (no landings allowed) and East Ironbound Island, both in Mahone Bay. We wandered East Ironbound for four hours. A great day. Highlights: *Pearl Island* Both puffins and Razorbills were actively attending nests on Pearl, unlike last summer. Numbers are hard to estimate, but I'd guess at least 40+ Puffin nests and 50+ Razorbill -- but these are minimums. There were many more Black Guillemots but very hard to pin a number. Kittiwakes continue to increase. When I first spotted this species on Pearl in 2005 there were 3 nests, but I counted 40+ this time (20+ in 2013). Last year we had but 2 Arctic Terns, but I'd guess there were 20 pairs this year. Double-crested Cormorants had a small colony as usual, and there was a single immature Great Cormorant. Lots of both the two big resident gull species. *East Ironbound Island* We were on the island from 11h00 to 15h30, so not the best time for bird song, but we tried. Try as we might we could not locate a single Blackpoll Warbler. The most common warbler by far was American Redstart, and we had singles or doubles of five other warblers - Parula, Yellow, Yellow-rumped, Common Yellowthroat, Magnolia. But we were successful with Fox Sparrows, of which at least 5 were heard singing. We had no Boreal Chickadees, but I had my first Black-capped Chickadees for the island. Not a good sign. An Eastern Kingbird seemed territorial. Perhaps this species breeds here: we had three on our last visit to the island last summer. Winter Wren and a Red Crossbill were also welcome. *June 22* The Maritimes Camera Club visited Sambro Island on the Sunday. Birding highlights: at least 50 Arctic Terns, aggressively defending their territories, which were in all grassy areas. And there were an amazing number of Black Guillemots, nesting in all suitable rock cavities, even around the landing area. My rough minimum was 250 adults sighted, but I would guess the number of nests at 200+. Or more. Lots of both the two big resident gull species. Ah, the island life.
