So we are talking about very different = situations. An additional and perhaps more important factor may be the almost = total absence of food waste. So for much of the year there would have = been nothing to attract Raccoons. Pet food was unheard of and the dog = got table scraps, bacon rind and bones.=20 Most people had a hog or two mostly fed on scrap food, spare = apples/vegetables and surplus milk with a supplement of bought meal. = About the only 'food' that did not get consumed was the rotten portion = trimmed from potatoes, carrots and turnips that were starting to go. And in this vein, from WWII Scotland-- Dearly beloved brethern is it not a sin When peeling potatoes to throw out the skin ? The skins feed the pigs and the pigs feed us. Dearly beloved brethern is it not thus ? Dogs will pack = up, chase deer and only eat the arse end of deer and leave them to haul = their hind quarters around living for days. (House cats should not be = allowed to roam free either, no other pets are allowed!!!) My father trapped racoons too as I still do but on a minimum basis. So = between dog hunter and trappers, racoons numbers were kept in check. not = as many trappers now and no racoon dog hunters. I would say that coyotes must be killing racoons in large numbers now = too though. The large increase in painted turtles in this area (each lake has over = a dozen) seems largly related to the lack of wood turtles. We never even = used to see a single painted turtle, now they are everywhere.
