From the expression of symptoms; a slow transmission from = affected trees to nearby healthy trees one can rule out=20 1) insects; they surely would advance more rapidly:=20 2) most forms of canker (based on my limited experience there is one = that can infect & kill all Poplar in a 1/4 acre patch within one growing = season and another that causes a very gradual girdling of scattered = trees over a decade or more.) or other fungal diseases that spread by = means of spores. Just as a pure guess, having perhaps eliminated the above, it sounds = like a bacterial or fungal infection that spreads by root grafting and = plugs the xylem. Yt, Dave Webster, Kentville =20 ----- Original Message -----=20 From: klantz@ns.sympatico.ca=20 To: naturens@chebucto.ns.ca=20 Sent: Sunday, June 22, 2014 10:46 PM Subject: [NatureNS] Aspen die off Several years ago a few of the Aspen trees on my property died = followed by a few more the next spring. This year several more close to = the earlier affected trees have started to put out leaves but appear to = be dying. Half the stand is now gone as the die-off advances through = them several trees at a time. As the bark falls away from the affected = trees I can see tracks left in the sapwood by some sort of borer. This = could be something that moved in after the trees died but is more likely = the source of the problem.=20 I have linked some photos showing the tracks left behind in the = surface wood of the dead trees. Any ideas on what is causing this.=20 https://www.dropbox.com/s/sq6n4z2mk37noh8/IMG_2419.jpg https://www.dropbox.com/s/w3esnuaptbyfpy3/IMG_2418.jpg No virus found in this message.
