If the latte= r=2C it may explain its nocturnal habit. I suspect this species is rare in = NS although it may be just rarely encountered since it is found in forests.= A closely related species is V. vidua=2C which is a ground nester so likel= y this one is too. The two mentioned form part of the "rufa" group in the h= uge Vespidae Family & they appear similar in appearance.
