Hi All=2C
I saw a small flock (4-6) of Bobolinks today on my neighbours lawn. The=
y are the first I've seen in the area in four+/- years. The only other nota=
ble spring bird sighting is a Rose-breasted Grosbeak that attended my feede=
rs yesterday.
Warblers have started to arrive in the area but in small numbers. A flo=
ck (10-12) of Yellow-rumped Warblers were around the feeders most of last w=
eek. They mostly went for the suet feeder but also tried out my peanut feed=
er and even spent time on the tray seed feeders=3B mostly going after the c=
racked corn. A Northern Parula joined them on two days but stayed on the su=
et feeder. the Parula is a new yard bird for me. The snow is almost all=
gone in the valleys but remains in some places up on the barrens. I've yet=
to see a butterfly=2C Odonata or day flying moth. The same goes for mosqui=
toes and black flies. A few wildflowers=2C mostly hawkweed=2C are starting =
to appear and buds on the wild blueberry=2C pin cherry=2C serviceberry and =
apple are poised to open this week. Leaves are out on some trees and will l=
ikely appear on the rest later this week. Tree Swallows started nest bu=
ilding today after a week of checking out nest boxes. Swallow numbers look =
down but they may be delaying nesting until the arrival of more flying inse=
cts. In short everything is a week to ten days behind normal. All the =
best. Fritz McEvoy =
