Hi All=2C
    I finally finished cleaning out my swallow boxes from the 2013 season t=
oday=3B and once again it was a pretty good year. There were 24 boxes check=
ed.=20
=20
   The results were:=20
14 boxes with nests and breeding evidence (fledge droppings etc.)
6 boxes with completed nests but no breeding evidence (nest with feathers b=
ut no droppings)
2 boxes with partial nests (some grass construction but no feathers)
1 box with no nesting evidence
1 box containing remains of 2012 nest and flying squirrel nest that wasn't =
cleaned out last season
=20
    There was only one surprise=3B a box that had a nest with a small amoun=
t of insulation on top. When I attempted to remove the nest a flying squirr=
el leaped onto my chest and then glided safely to the ground. Scared the **=
** out of me as I had tapped the box and opened the door without the squirr=
el announcing its presence. I replaced the nest and left the box uncleaned=
. Only one of the nests contained an unhatched egg.
=20
     There are a flock of Tree Swallows that have been around for a week or=
 so checking out the boxes=3B but mating and breeding are a few days/weeks =
away yet.
=20
     My first Hummingbird arrived today. It's a little early this season as=
 they almost never arrive before May 18th./19th. A White-crowned Sparrow ha=
s also been foraging at the feeders since May12th. I usually get a few W-c=
 Sparrows every year around this time. All the best.=20
