I left the city 5:15 am and started= =0Abirding at 7:05. I only managed 16 species in 3 hours (plus 1 hour 15 = =0Areturning) but it was a fabulous day to be at the coast. There was =0Ano= thing out of the ordinary except for perhaps the sheer number of =0ASavanna= h Sparrows at different spots. At one spot in particular, on the =0Amotoriz= ed trail behind the dunes about 3/4 to the end of the beach it =0Aseemed li= ke I was surrounded by dozens of them all zip, zip, zeeaing =0Aintermittent= ly all around me.=0A=0AI think I was a bit unlucky in the marsh because it = looked like a great =0Ahabitat but I only saw 2 Green-winged Teal and 14 Bu= fflehead. I don't know what they were but =0Atheir sound did seem le= ss musical than a junco. Also at the very end =0Aof the beach I saw a black bird f= ly over with rusty wings. I don't think =0Ait was a Rusty Blackbird though.= It was flying with 2 or 3 stiff wings =0Abeats then coasting for a second = or two and continued that pattern. I =0Aalso missed some birds whose sounds= I didn't recognize and where in =0Asensitive habitat where I couldn't get = any closer. I was surprised I did =0Anot see a single shore bird--they must= have no taste for aesthetics.=0A=0AI would definitely go there again but n= ext time I would chose not to go =0Aall the way to the end of the beach and= explore trails going to the =0Asouth end peninsula instead. Though Birding= Sites of NS mentions that =0Asome of the beach will be closed for the Pipi= ng Plovers sometime around =0Athe end of April and I'm not sure how much of= the place gets closed down.=0A=0AOn the main path to the beach, there is a= bird migration monitoring site =0Asetup by Acadia University. The antenna = at this site is broken and bent =0Aover so that the top is nearly touching = the ground. It has Phil Taylor's =0Acontact name and number on it. Does Phi= l Taylor monitor this feed?
