Walked through Rotary Park in Sydney today. There is still quote a bit of snow in the more sheltered parts of the wood. Pussy willows are out in a few places. Coltsfoot is in bloom along the banks. I heard but did not see a red winged black bird and a white throated sparrow singing.
Two red squirrels were chasing each other in a tree near the Shandwick Street entrance.
Observed in gardens crocuses in bloom, heather in bloom (actually for the past 2-3 days) and just today some lungwort blooming.
I have 24 or so American Goldfinches at my feeders, almost entirely in summer plumage,as well as 10starlings,10 chickadees and a male Downey woodpecker. There are 8 slate eyed juncos feeding from the dropped seed and foraging in the hedges, 4 blue jays, and, inevitably, 8 or so pigeons.
No sign of the fox sparrows recently but yesterday I did see a fox.
Cheers,
Margaret Fraser
