Index of Subjects Hi Nancy & All, It will take some trial & error to learn how much can be taken from small trees without weakening the root system, where I suspect most of the reserves are stored, and this would lead to early decline. Under good growing conditions Hard Maple can be tapped much earlier than 40 years. I started tapping the three Maple that I planted on our lawn in 1967 when they were 10 years old with no obvious adverse effects. I understand that the sap of some Hard Maple trees is unusually rich in sugar. If this is a genetic effect and not due to better growing conditions then the small tree system would be well suited to tree stock improvement.
