I also totally ge= t why not everyone uses it; I=92m an irregular user myself (I=92ve got a ha= ng-up about filling forms in general =97 bad associations, I guess, though = I=92m trying to get over it). A quick fix to centralizing observations would be to set up an eBird accoun= t for NS Birds*, where someone who=92s trolling facebook or whatever for ra= rities anyway (ACCDC? seasonal editors for NS Birds? or 4 volunteers out of= the >1900 NSBS facebook members?) could simply enter them as an incidental= sighting. The sightings could automatically appear on the NS Birds website= , just like local eBird goodies already do on James Churchill=92s handy sit= e here: http://bluehourbirding.blogspot.ca That solution could happen right now, and would let facebookers be facebook= ers, naturens=92ers be naturens=92ers, etc =97 wherever each individual bir= der has the most fun sharing their sightings. Cheers, Andy Horn Halifax *PS The source of the sighting could be entered in the Comments, but if tha= t=92s too much of a pain (it would be for me!), there could be an eBird acc= ount for each source (NSBSfacebook, naturens, etc). That would show where o= ne could go for more info, and would still get all of them to show up all t= ogether in eBird. One part, philosophical, one part technical, one part quality control, one = part privacy... One venue or many? Encouraging people to use a single mechanism for reporting - like eBird - c= ould go a long way, but there is still a large percentage of people that mi= ght never go that route and prefer more social mechanisms like Facebook and= naturens (not that naturens is social media - just that it hosts discussio= n as well) where a lot of great sightings are posted. Arguably, a more-crit= ical mass of people could be encouraged/convinced to eBird, but with ever-i= ncreasing options for reporting/discussing sightings (listservs, social med= ia apps, eBird, websites, photo sites) I doubt we would ever approach too-n= ear-unanimity with a single mechanism. A couple years ago I mapped the Indigo Bunting fallout (2012?) and the dist= ribution/spread of Red-bellied Woodpeckers in the province - about 20-30% o= f sightings from NS-RBA and naturens had made it to eBird. And, I believe i= t was around 50% of Snowy Owl sightings made it to eBird this year. Alternatively, instead of, or as well as, trying to encourage people to sub= mit to eBird (or whichever central repository), another approach could be t= o make it easy for people to get email messages and facebook posts into eBi= rd. I think Richard and others are right that no one has time to report sig= htings on several different sites. The approach here would be PARSING, wher= e when a user posts to facebook or naturens, they have the option to also s= ubmit this as a record to eBird (etc) - the message would be parsed behind = the scenes to extract the relevant info, the user reviews/modifies, and cli= cks submit and it goes to eBird. On Facebook or Flicker, this could work via a third party app...that doesn'= t exist yet, that I know of...when you post, you have the option to "eBird = this post" - any developers in the house? On listservs, this could work with a little bit of parsing code, e.g., on t= he html messages at http://www.chebucto.ns.ca/Environment/FNSN/MList/ (I ha= ve started this, but have about as much time as Richard). If parsed well, t= he details of the sighting could be exported into a format amenable to eBir= d's upload-from-file portal. When doing this, the same questions of data quality arise as with current e= Bird data...and this would have to be balanced against the value accrued by= the additional records. But there are ways to assign confidence to observa= tions, just like we do manually when reviewing reports. I imagine this is a problem that more and more people will face in the year= s to come. Since it will become harder and harder to parse information from= all these various sources, manually, my perspective is that an automated s= olution (with review) will be most sustainable. would be happy to be part of a solution-finding party... cheers, James On Mon, Mar 24, 2014 at 2:13 PM, Richard Stern <sternrichard@gmail.com<mail= to:sternrichard@gmail.com>> wrote: This brings up a more general point.
