Angus,

Tachinids are parasitoids rather than parasites. Parasitoids kill 
their host while parasites live off of theirs (I use the "d" in 
parasitoids to remember "Die!"). But considering the adult fly as a 
predator is a good way to look at it (most predators do kill their 
prey).
