Took my wife for a Christmas spin "around the loop" south of Yarmouth
yesterday, with the main purpose of showing her a snowy owl.

We detoured to the golf course (No Mr. Bean evident; he was seen Dec. 21;
fingers crossed.).

Down the Sunday Point Road a snowy shot up from right beside the road and
obligingly parked not far away, giving us a good look. Dunlins (seen on the
Xmas count) were still on the beach. Saw some small birds and got close
enough to identify a flock of about 10 northern horned larks. (Got a good
enough look at one to eliminate the prairie race!)

Proceeded down to Chebogue Point. There was a huge raft of geese off
Shortcliff Point along with a few bufflehead. While we were looking, a
rough-legged hawk cruised into view, and very cooperatively hovered down
right beside the car.

Across from Jimmy Trefry's dairy farm, a flock of at least 300 snow
buntings flew up then landed. Colour pattern with black wing tips was
diagnostic, and some landed very close to the road.

At the end of the road, I wandered down to the beach. A much larger flock
of horned larks (150?) flipped around. Black tails and "horns" on one head
confirmed identification.

The snow buntings and horned larks didn't make count day, so our run was
amply rewarded in all ways!
