Hi Yt, DW The need to address global warming transcends our usual ideas about = environmental protection. To paraphrase Charles Dickens:=20 It's not about the environment.=20 It's all about the environment. What it's not about is individual acts of good conscience. The problem is our addiction to the abundant and cheap energy derived = from the burning of fossil fuels. When 250 million years' worth of = stored carbon is released into the atmosphere during just 150 years, = there are consequences. The climate heats up. If we don't do something = about it, a radical change to many of the vital ecosystems that sustain = our civilization is inevitable.=20 Hi Paul & All, Dec 5, 2013 I agree mostly with the above. =20 The fundamental reason for the failure to act on global warming is the = ruthless exercise of political power by the fossil-fuel lobby. No, not at all. The fossil fuel industry simply responds to market = demand. Remember Pogo "I have seen the enemy and he is us". As I = observed in a broader context (1/27/2006) "the primary destructive = forces are over consumption by humans who have come to regard sybaritic = hedonism as bare necessities. " The rich nations are quite prepared to = see the poor nations cut back on their already tiny carbon emissions but = balk reducing their own by more than token amounts. The pollticians can = not act until a majority of the electorate are prepared to accept a more = frugal lifestyle and that can happen only if individuals step up to the = plate and walk the talk. =20 =20 =20 We have to create a political base to counteract the immense power of = the fossil fuel lobby. It's not enough to cut back on personal energy = use. It may make one feel good, but it won't solve the problem. Little drops of water, little grains of sand, make the mighty = ocean and the pleasant land (anon). If enough people cut back on = personal energy use we just might dodge the bullet. If too few people do = then we are doomed and deserve it. And it is therefore vital that people make decisions based on real = understanding of the natural world as opposed to fund-raising propaganda = spouted by various wildlife/naturalist organizations.
