Saturday, November 16, 2013: Coastal Wetland Restoration Tony Bowron, coastal wetland ecologist, will lead a guided walk on the Cheverie Creek salt marsh to explore how the wetland habitat, flora, and fauna have recovered from the restoration of tidal flow in 2005. The coastal mudflat, new tidal crossing, plants, animals, and habitat features will be explored. We will learn how the restoration project, the first of its kind in Nova Scotia, came about. See http://saltmarsh.ca. Pre- registration is required as the maximum number of participants is 25. Please register by 4pm, November 15. Contact: Burkhard Plache, 475-1129, burkhardplache@gmail.com Time/Place: 11:00 a.m. on the Cheverie Creek Causeway in Cheverie, Hants County. (Optionally meeting time for carpooling is 9:30 a.m. at the West End Mall parking lot, across Mumford Road from St. Agnes Junior High School.) Duration: 2 hours Difficulty: Moderate to Difficult Note: It is 88 km from Halifax, or just over 75 minutes. From Brooklyn follow Highway 215 to the Cheverie Creek Causeway, river, and marsh. It is the only pull-off/stopping point along that stretch of road. Just past the river/marsh on the right there is a small field with a big sign for the Cheverie salt marsh. Dress warmly, wear waterproof boots, and bring binoculars, field guides, etc. As it is hunting season, please wear orange. There is a good café in Summerville, called the “Avon Emporium,” for a pre- or post-walk bite to eat.
