Index of Subjects --_384d23b5-3dbd-43d0-8b3f-28c16fee1b8f_ Content-Type: text/plain; charset="Windows-1252" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Thanks Eric for the directions below, though it wasn't my intention to "upb= raid" you, just to have the best guidance.=20 =20 The bird was either not present or out of sight when we first got there aro= und 1 to 2 PM. After searching around awhile for a better view of the golf = course and a bit of Chebogue Point, we stopped for coffee with a friend of = ours, Diane MacDonald.=20 =20 We checked the internet and discovered the bird had been seen this morning.= Diane's husband is a goose fan and so we got some leads to check out. We f= irst gave the golf course another look with no luck around 3:20 PM. Then be= fore we got to the next spot, Diane called us saying she had seen a goose = on the golf course. Heading back with with fingers crossed but half expecti= ng a Canada Goose, we were confronted with the Bean Goose moving steadily t= oward the green Eric mentions. Several people pulled up and had excellent l= ooks from 3:40 to 4 PM, when the goose moved behind the raised green and co= uld no longer be seen from the road.=20 =20 Because of the undulating terrain, it can stay out of sight quite easily, s= o if it is not visible, other angles and/or patience may be required. It be= ing alone, no size comparsion was possible. =20 The Stokes Field Guide to the Birds of North America also covers both speci= es of Bean Gooses (with photos), but also is West Coast oriented. The only = rossicus birds are distant (for the head) flight photos. Illustrations of r= ossicus birds seem to vary. Beaman & Madge's The Handbook of Bird Indentifi= cation show one that resembles the Taiga Bean Goose in Stokes, while Mullar= ney, Svensson, Zetterstrom & Grant's Birds of Europe shows one the resemble= s the Tundra Bean Goose (serrirostris race) in Stokes. The editions I have = are pre-split, the Handbook being 1998, so maybe not so attentive to bill s= tructure. I am more inclined to follow the Birds of Europe (2004) which is = a stunning field guide. Without knowing for certain how they look, I am inc= lined to at least say this bird does seem to resemble the Taiga Bean Goose = more than the serrirostris Tundra shown in Stokes or the rossicus Tundra sh= own in The Birds of Europe. I have not seen others' photos, but did zoom in= on some of those I was able to get. A tough call indeed.
