[NatureNS] paper wasp reproductives?

This afternoon as we were walking along the edge of the second level deck, there was a steady stream of Paper Wasps (Polistes) coming from below and clumsily landing on the sides of the house. Eventually they found their way over the roof. The main rush was over after about 30min aside from a few stragglers.

They had no interest in me or the labs except occasionally running into us and buzzing away although we were a bit scared at first. I am guessing these were reproductives similar to the large flying ants I see in early summer on their mating flight? I have never experienced this before with wasps.
