This old barn was rebuilt 6 yrs ago. Over the past five years a small group of Barn Swallows has found the (now few) entry points and begun to recolonize. The pattern of their settlement is kind of neat.

The pioneers established the first few nests scattered along the upper beam. Each year since a few more have been built at intervals along it for a total of 11 from one end to the other (not all shown-would need a wide-angle lens):

Until this year there were no other nests elsewhere in the barn except along this beam. Finally a few were constructed on the beam below and one built on the matching upper beam on the other side. No new nests were built on the original nesting beam but all showed some activity. Maximum nest density there must have been reached? Or a new family group is setting up shop on their own ledge?

Interesting to see what goes on next year.

Nancy
