While I was = sitting there waiting a bird approached from the ocean at high speed. I = didn't know what it was since it was nose on to me but when it passed = about 20 feet over my head I knew too late that it was a Peregrine = Falcon. In photography the axiom is shoot first and ask questions later. = I missed a perfect opportunity to photograph the falcon! When I was returning along the driveway a bird popped out of the gulley, = thanks to my pishing, and sat boldly in the clear for about two seconds = atop a dead tree limb. Unfortunately when hiking I carry my camera in my = waist pack so another opportunity to photograph a clearly rare bird was = missed. The overall coloration was ochre, an honest presentation of = colour since the sun was behind and to the side of the bird. The visual = impression was that of a large slender sparrow of about six inches = length. A striking facial patch was evident, more obvious than shown in = Sibley's. I'm counting on my visual memory alone on this one and the = closet match to my memory is Bachman's Sparrow. Don't count on it but = keep an eye out when in the gulley. I'll look again tomorrow morning or = perhaps this evening.
