Hi Dave: So it's not named for a descendant, it's for the =20
'original' Gay-Lussac, who is sometimes known as J.L. and sometimes =20
L.J.? Is the first author of your reference the equally or perhaps =20
even more famous Alexander von Humboldt, explorer-polymath, his =20
contemporary and colleague? In the early 1800s together they =20
demonstrated that the composition of the atmosphere did not change =20
with altitude, for instance.
If what has become known as the huckleberry was discovered as a =20
European genus in the first place by v.H. et al., mutual respect and =20
friendship could explain how v.H. came to honour G-L in this way, by =20
naming the genus Gaylussacia. Does this sound correct?
