My thanks to all who offered help with this; it has enabled me to 
confirm without doubt that the two nests are those of the black and 
yellow mud dauber - both wasp and nest fit the pictures perfectly. I was 
interested to note that the nests, which I thought initially looked like 
they were covered with dried-up leaves - were at that time obviously 
just in the process of being built; they are now more neatly entirely 
smoothed over, including the entrance hole, with what is obviously 
drying mud (from a nearby stream bed)

Such endlessly interesting life all around us!
