This evening Bev and I watched four nighthawks feeding above the Round Hill
River, the most we've seen at one time this summer.

Two evenings ago we watched as a local flock of rock pigeons was pursued in
a leisurely manner by what looked like a merlin. The hawk seemed to be
practicing and made no attempt to seize a pigeon; perhaps it had already
eaten one. Somebody in the Round Hill area is housing and feeding the
pigeon flock and I wouldn't complain if a merlin stuck around long enough
to eat a few of them!

I found an unfamiliar (to me) shrub here on a bank above the river,
evidently a descendant of the Daphne mezereum which were brought here by
the French some centuries ago. That immigrant makes up for the annoying
buckthorns (Rhamnus frangula) which lurk in the undergrowth around here.
