Hi all
Charlie Kendell and I did some birding yesterday Aug 19 at Big I. The =
tide was high most of the day and although I did a shorebird count, I am =
sure many more were left unseen in the salt marsh grasses.=20
Highlight was a new bird for Charlie, a Baird's Sandpiper (juv) along =
the Strait side of the east end of the causeway on the upper sand in the =
first 100 m or so of the east end of the causeway.=20
On the way out we drove the MacLellans Brook Rd and at the NE end just =
before the intersection of the Sherbrooke Rd. we saw 4 Solitary =
Sandpipers along with 2 Least and a Semipalmated Sandpiper in a wet area =
along the road=20

The Solitary Sandpiper remains at the McGee Pond half way along the Big =
I. road. A Sora with at least 3 young is also there and has been seen =
for a numbers of weeks. Charlie and I noticed interesting behaviour of =
the adult as it seemed to be carrying nest material into a clump of high =
grass. It made 6-7 trips in with grasses. This seems to be odd behaviour =
as there were young birds present and it seems late in the year for nest =
building.

Land birds were not plentiful with the heat of the day. We did note a =
few butterflies- nothing new- Northern Crescent, Clouded Sulphurs, =
Cabbage White and a unid'd largish Fritillary likely Great Spangled. In =
Egerton we had a Black Swallowtail.=20

Bird results have been posted to eBird.
