Hi all=0AYesterday was a beautiful evening and as I am feeling up=0Ato goin=
g out I went to the river to cast a few flies.=0AA bed of Turtlehead=A0_Che=
lone glabra_ was in bloom in the ditch=0Ajust opposite where I parked. The =
side of the ditch has water oozing out=0Aof the hillside so it stays moist =
all summer.=A0 The bed was maybe 50 m long and =0Aquite wide in spots. I've=
never seen a bed of Turtlehead before - just single plants.=0AThe pool the=
water forms is a good spot for tree frogs. They call there in season.=0AIn=
the Turtleheads are a few bunches of Hardhack _Spiraea tomentosa_.=0AA=A0b=
ee was feeding on their flowers. It was quite showy with a red abdomen=0Abu=
t I could not see the thorax so it was either=A0 _Bombus ternarius_ or _B. =
rufocinctus_.=A0 =0AWhen I went down to the water, small beds of Pickerelwe=
ed _Pontederia cordata_ were=0Ain bloom up and down the river. I was standi=
ng beside such a bed and after a while a =0Asmall group of Bumble bees _Bom=
bus impatiens_ came to feed on the blue blooms.=0AThere would be 8 - 10 bee=
s in the group and as the good they were easy to id.=0AAfter 5 minutes or s=
o they left for another bed.=0AThe fish were quite in good cheer so it was =
a delightful evening.=0AOn the way home a woodcock fluttered across in fron=
t of the car. A friend from the UK=0Acalls is "rooding" - not a term I've h=
eard in NS and I'm not sure of the spelling - let=0Awith his accent and all=
. He might say "Use a GP fly when the woodcock are rooding!"=0AEnjoy the la=
te summer=0APaul
