Only the results from bird surveys such as the Breeding Bird Survey will de=
termine if there was an observable impact this year. The Nova Scotia, long =
term, breeding bird survey trends for the majority of bird species show a l=
ong term decrease (about 61% of the species). Our own work on Brier Island =
for the last 30+ years shows a long term, annual reduction in the total num=
ber of birds we are encountering of about 2%. This means that we are encoun=
tering about half the number of birds that we did 30 years ago. This trend =
is pretty consistent in the medium term (since 1999) so it appears that for=
the moment, we haven't detected any increased reduction that the more seve=
re weather Nova Scotia has been experiencing in recent years might have cau=
sed.

A reduction in the number of birds that make it to the breeding grounds may=
be compensated for somewhat if the breeding season is a good one but repea=
ted reductions will obviously eventually take their toll on the population.=
There are many factors that may affect bird populations negatively as well=
as positively. A severe weather event such as you're describing this spri=
ng might result in a lack of breeding birds in certain areas. It depends wh=
ere the birds were headed, how many individuals were involved, what were th=
e species involved and how many birds managed to return to land.

All the best,

Lance
