I had Caspian Terns at = Grand Tracadie and Pt De Roche. I too found the mudflats in the NP = difficult to observe because of no pulloff spots for observations( bike = lanes). There were a lot of bikers so I guess they outweigh birders.=20 Another good shorebird spot not mentioned by Angus is at Rollo Bay with = an access along a golf course. I was not there this visit, but when the = tide is right, this can be a great spot.=20 cheers Ken ---- Original Message -----=20 From: Angus MacLean=20 To: naturens=20 Sent: Tuesday, August 13, 2013 1:55 PM Subject: [NatureNS] PEI BIrds My wife & I spent four days in PEI last week. For those interested in = shorebirds, this will give them a hint or two where to look.=20 =20 We were located near North Rustico & checked out areas from = Brackley/Covehead to East Point. =20 The Covehead area is not what it once was with oodles of shorebirds. = The exposed mudflats were too distant to identify such small creatures = (50-75) although we may have missed low tide. There were ~5 Caspian = Terns with them along with lots of small terns. There had been a mixed = flock of Common & Arctic Terns nesting by the bridge years ago so I = assume this still exists & the terns were from that colony. Now that the = Park has established bike trails along the length of the road, there is = no place to park & observe the Bay & marshy area now. (The longer-legged = waders were always useful to check out there before). =20 At St. Peter's Bay there were lots of mudflats but no birds. (Just = scanned the area on the way by). Still a good spot to check out further. =20 At the Barrachois just east of Souris, there was a good assortment of = shorebirds including a number of Golden Plover. There were also ~15 = Bonaparte Gulls which we would see later on too. =20 At East Point Lighthouse, there were 35 Surf Scoter, #s of Bonaparte = Gulls passing by, D/C (mainly) & Great Cormorants, 100s of Gannets = (mostly adults w/ a few imms.) fishing close in to shore (catching = mackeral, I presume), a flock of Bank Swallow just over the bank (bank = very unstable so a fence keeps everyone back). This should be a great = spot in the fall to watch shearwaters & other pelagics come by. =20 We were not on a birding holiday so didn't spend much time on birds. = Very few butterflies similar to NS. =20 Angus ------=_NextPart_000_0086_01CE9837.F914DB80 Content-Type: text/html; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN"> <HTML><HEAD> <META content=3D"text/html; charset=3Diso-8859-1" = http-equiv=3DContent-Type> <STYLE>.hmmessage P { PADDING-BOTTOM: 0px; MARGIN: 0px; PADDING-LEFT: 0px; PADDING-RIGHT: = 0px; PADDING-TOP: 0px } BODY.hmmessage { FONT-FAMILY: Calibri; FONT-SIZE: 12pt } </STYLE> <META name=3DGENERATOR content=3D"MSHTML 8.00.6001.23507"></HEAD> <BODY class=3Dhmmessage bgColor=3D#ffffff> <DIV><FONT size=3D2 face=3DArial></FONT> </DIV> <DIV>Ken McKenna<BR>Box 218 Stellarton NS<BR>B0K 1S0<BR>902 = 752-7644<BR></DIV> <DIV>Hi Angus and all</DIV> <DIV>I too was on PEI last week not really for birding but did a little = and was=20 at a couple of the same locations as Angus.
