The Shark Boat = featured on the CTV news last night and in the Chronicle Herald today is = out of Eastern Passage and has been affiliated with BIO and Dalhousie, = providing measurements, sex, condition and lat/long of each shark = caught. Tags have been provided to the Captain through BIO (I believe) = and over the last 12 years of operation, they have tagged many hundreds = of Blue Shark. One season alone the records showed over 500 caught and = released. This is and has always been a catch and release venture = attracting sport fisherman and others but with research and protection = of the species elements.=20 In talking with the Captain last year, he mentioned that one of = =E2=80=9Chis=E2=80=9D tagged Blue Sharks was recovered near Cuba but of = all the tags, that has been the only one returned. To a much lesser = extent, Porbeagle Sharks are caught, tagged and released. This because = they are just not as plentiful I presume. Best....Dave =20 From: James W. This article includes a video of the = operation at sea. Apparently both research projects are just beginning now and have = funding? for a few years (4 years and 40 blue sharks, and ? years and 25 = great white sharks? Cheers from Jim. Yesterday I wrote:=20 Marnoon & shark-tagging, July 31/13 My walk ended back at the parking lot at 11:50 a.m., just in time to = hear Maritime Noon on CBC Radio. The first item on the show was about = SHARK TAGGING and tracking off Nova Scotia with a sport-fishing company = that was specially trained to help the research team of Dr. Warski? of = Dalhousie University. I think the show's host, Carmen Klassen?, was talking with Dr. = Warski on the fishing boat, live, as they were catching, tagging, and = releasing blue sharks, Nova Scotia's most abundant offshore shark. The = fishers were implanting pinger tags??, and then the Ocean Tracking = Network can track the movements of such sharks from their positioned = tracking stations in lots of locations. It was mentioned that some of = the blues migrate to waters near Sable Island, where the attractant is = lots of young seals. Also mentioned was that Massachusetts researcher colleagues have = caught, tagged, and released numbers of great white sharks, which then = migrate north and often into Nova Scotia waters (I remember reading = about them in the Chronicle Herald a few months ago). Carmen also mentioned that somehow their Web site at = www.cbc.ca/maritimenoon/ contains live feeds from the fishing boat, = photos on the Facebook site, twitters, etc. And check the Web site = later today or tomorrow for the broadcast or the podcast of the whole = show. _______________________________________________ Nature mailing list Nature@blomidonnaturalists.ca = http://blomidonnaturalists.ca/mailman/listinfo/nature_blomidonnaturalists= .ca ------=_NextPart_000_0012_01CE8ED2.79DB13C0 Content-Type: text/html; charset="utf-8" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable <HTML><HEAD></HEAD> <BODY=20 style=3D"WORD-WRAP: break-word; -webkit-nbsp-mode: space; = -webkit-line-break: after-white-space"=20 dir=3Dltr> <DIV dir=3Dltr> <DIV style=3D"FONT-SIZE: 12pt; FONT-FAMILY: 'Calibri'; COLOR: #000000"> <DIV>Hi All</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Just to add a bit of interest maybe to the shark tagging.
