Index of Subjects The dabblers should be safe, Nancy. Canada geese normally feed on land eating mostly grasses and, when they can, grain- as in gleaning fields after oats and other grains have been harvested. They do eat insects as well, but again most of those seem to be land-based. We have had breeding geese on our pond for a number of years, and they are more competition for my grazing horses than for any of the ducks. They also co-exist with many species of ducks on the 'French Basin Pond' in Annapolis Royal. And I have been coming here for over 40yrs. They stopped in the reeds, closed their beaks over the part just above the surface and pulled to the top. Gleaning insects I would guess. In small numbers, so long as it stays that way, they should not pose much competition to the fish-eating C Mergansers and Loons who breed here. Might be worse for the other breeding dabblers like Wood Ducks and Ring Necks though. Nancy Sent from my iPhone
