second peak in numbers for the year. Anyone wanting to see pretty good =
numbers would be best to go over the next few days although a few swifts =
will still be present till about mid-August. I find by then, however, =
the entry time becomes a little hard to predict. Note tonight the birds =
entered quite late- just as the street lights came on. Most of the year, =
the swifts have been in the chimney well before the street lights come =
on. On July 23, a darker evening, the majority went in by 8:33.=20

Swift numbers have increased at the =

school the last few days with an estimate of 173 entering the chimney =

(July 26). I arrived at the chimney at 8:38 tonight and could hear =
swifts=20
high in the air. There was one other car with 2 people there ahead of =
me.=20
Tonight it was 25C and mostly clear when I arrived with a slight breeze. =
The=20
swifts tonight did not put on much of a visible show. They remained high =
in the=20
sky twittering until 8:58 when the first dropped in the chimney=20
from a vertical plunge. Eight more dropped down in a =
similar=20

another 64 entered for a night's total of 173.

It was a difficult night to count as =
dark clouds=20
came in behind the chimney about 10 min. before the swifts entered. =
After all=20
had gone in, I went over to the car which was parked in the centre of =
the=20
parking lot and they had missed the bulk of the swifts seeing only =
one=20
bird. They had placed themselves with an electric pole and the =
observatory=20
covering a great deal of the chimney. I had not realized their =
visibility was so=20
limited from that angle. Luckily they live in New Glasgow and can come =
back=20
another night.
