The capsule of a fertilized plant is quite = obvious (~4 cm long) and dead scape plus caspule usually persists erect = into the second year and lasts a year or two more after the scape has = flopped over. The capsule design is quite cunning; has ridge caps that = open during dry conditions. The easiest way to see a mature capsule is = to hand-pollinate several flowers next year because they rarely set = naturally. Yt, Dave Webster, Kentville ----- Original Message -----=20 From: nancy dowd=20 To: naturens=20 Sent: Sunday, July 14, 2013 7:37 AM Subject: [NatureNS] Pink Lady's Slipper question After the flower dried up this is all that is left of the Lady's = Slippers near the lakeshore. Just floral bracts at the top of the stem: http://www.flickr.com/photos/92981528@N08/9283775324/ Here is a furry close-up of the floral bract: http://www.flickr.com/photos/92981528@N08/9280998865/ Would this indicate these Lady's Slippers were not fertilized? The few = references I looked at showed a brown almond-sized seed pod that I think = should still be on the stem otherwise? Nancy No virus found in this message.
