I'm a bit confused about this - the headline reads National Park Reserve bu=
t the first sentence in the text indicates that Sable has been designated a=
s Canada's 43rd National Park!!
Hope the latter is true!! Good news, regardless.

Sable Island protected as National Park Reserve

It=E2=80=99s official: Sable Island is now Canada=E2=80=99s 43r=
d national park! The legislation to make the park official passed final rea=
ding in the House of Commons on June 18th and received Royal Assent the fol=
lowing day.

Located approximately 200 km off the coast of Nova Scotia, Sabl=
e Island is well known for its shipwrecks and wild horses. The island is al=
so significant for its rich diversity of flora and fauna, the largest grey =
seal colony in the world, the only breeding location for the Ipswich savann=
ah sparrow, and several species-at-risk including the roseate tern.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to speak up for Sable I=
sland. The national park designation is the highest level of protection tha=
t could be afforded the island and is an important recognition of the speci=
al place Sable Island holds in the hearts and minds of Nova Scotians.

Much work remains to do however, to ensure that a strong manage=
ment plan is put in place, that the island is kept free of any seismic expl=
oration, and that the focus of visitor experience be located primarily off-=
island.

To learn more about the next steps, read the CPAWS opinion piec=
e in the Chronicle Herald here.

Nova Scotia establishes Sackville Lakes Provincial Park

Right in the heart of Sackville lies an impressive system of la=
kes and woodlands. And, fortunately, this near-urban wilderness is now prot=
ected, with the creation of the Sackville Lakes Provincial Park.

The Nova Scotia government announced the designation of the pro=
vincial park in June. This is the first new provincial park established in =
the province in over a decade, though there have been plenty of protected w=
ilderness areas and nature reserves established over that time. Congrats to=
the Second Lake Regional Park Association for their hard work over many ye=
ars to make this park a reality.
